Air traffic grows in Spain: positive for tourist values

Everyone knows that tourism is the first industry in our country. Despite this, there is not a very powerful representation by the values associated with this very relevant sector of the national economy. In all the listed companies are AENA, IAG, Vueling, NH Hoteles, Sol Meliá and Amadeus. That is, only six representatives are listed on the national continuous market and without a specific weight in the selective index of Spanish equities, the Ibex 35. A figure that does not correspond to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that contributes the tourism sector to the economy of our country.

In any case, the behavior of these stocks has not been especially volatile. If not, on the contrary, they have shown a very uneven trend in each of them. Although the one that offers the greatest growth expectations is precisely AENA that has seen how in the worst days in the equity markets its shares appreciated slightly. Not surprisingly, it is a stock market that has been in a clear upward trend for several months and everything seems to indicate that it will go in the same direction from now on.

On the other hand, the data on air traffic in Spain have been frankly good. Something that should have a positive influence on the tourist values of the national equities. But its influence has not been its common denominator in these trading days. Although at least, they have in their favor that they have not been the most punished by the law of supply and demand in financial markets. It can be safely said that they have been in most cases some of the most stable in setting their prices.

Amadeus: more to buy

One of the values with the best technical aspect is the tourist reserve center, which shows a tendency to look between lateral and upward. Although it is true that it has worsened in recent weeks, but it is still an opportunity to open positions for the medium term. With a potential for revaluation that is still very close to 10% and above the other values of the national tourism sector. With a very stable line of business that allows small and medium investors to have great hopes. Among other reasons, because it has not broken any support of special relevance.

While on the other hand, it should be noted that Amadeus has announced a continued alliance to industrialize the NDC through the development, testing and market launch of new content offerings, such as new packages for companies and dynamic package rates. by United. These innovative products will allow customers to personalize their United travel with services such as priority access, baggage check-in, United Club access and many more, all linked to customer bookings in package form at a reduced price.

The worst hotels in the sector

Quite the opposite is happening with the hotel segment that does not finish starting despite the good data in outbound and inbound tourism. To the point that in these weeks they have seen how the price of their shares they have depreciated, in some cases with great intensity. Being in any case involved in a downtrend that is very pronounced and with the obvious risk that they continue to decline from now on. Because the pressure of sellers is much stronger than that of buyers. Beyond other considerations of a technical nature and perhaps also from the point of view of its fundamentals.

On the other hand, it is also necessary to assess in these precise moments that the  total Group revenue NH Hotels grew by 4,6%, reaching 822 million euros, driven by the good performance in all regions of Europe and particularly favorable in Spain. Where the company increases its average revenue per available room (RevPAR) by 5,3%, due almost entirely to the increase in the average price, which grows 4,7% to 102,3 million euros without being affected at the occupancy level, which is currently +0,5%. With data that have not excessively affected its price.

Vueling an outsider in the bag

This airline is one of the values that have become one of the great unknown by small and medium investors. Despite the boom that took place more than a few years ago and was one of the stars of equities in Spain. After this period of splendor, it has lost a lot of interest among investors and as a result it moves very few titles in all trading sessions. With a downward trend that is marking its price in the equity markets these days. Where it is not expected that it can do much better despite the good results that air traffic has offered, it has grown in Spain in recent months.

Vueling, on the other hand, the leading airline at Barcelona airport, celebrates today one of the most important milestones achieved in its thirteen years of history, transporting 100 million passengers at the Barcelona-El Prat Airport, its “home” . To celebrate this important event, the company has paid tribute to its city and its main base by decorating a plane with the phrase 'Vueling loves Barcelona', which from today will bear the name of Barcelona for the more than 130 destinations in which it operates throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It is an Airbus A320 model aircraft that is part of the 108 aircraft in the Vueling fleet.

Within this general context, there is no doubt that there are many advantages and disadvantages offered by the securities of this sector of the Spanish economy. With little room for maneuver on the part of small and medium investors from now on. And that translates into a very serious drop in their expectations on the stock market. Beyond what may happen to the general context of exchanges around the world. And that can take its toll for the next sessions on the stock market.

Being in any case involved in a downtrend that is very pronounced and with the obvious risk that they continue to decline from now on. Because the pressure of sellers is much stronger than that of buyers. Beyond another series of technical considerations and perhaps also from the point of view of its fundamentals.

These official data show that in the first two months of the year, passenger traffic grew by 6,7% and totaled 32.842.032 passengers in the airports in the Aena network. Being, as is logical, the summer months when these movements intensified the most at Spanish airports. Both in terms of domestic tourism and that from other countries. With some percentages, which being very positive, are somewhat lower than those calculated in previous years. In tune with the other countries around us.

Operations at airports

Regarding the number of operations, a total of 154.259 were carried out in Aena's airport network in February aircraft movements, 8,6% more than in the same month of the previous year. The airport that recorded the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 30.187 (+ 3,8%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 22.696 flights (+ 6,3%); Gran Canaria, with 10.361 (-0,4%); Malaga-Costa del Sol, with 8.140 (+ 6,1%); Palma de Mallorca, with 7.934 (+ 10%); Tenerife South, with 5.975 (+ 4,2%) and Alicante-Elche, with 5.645 (+9%).

While on the other hand, it is found that in the period analyzed, during the months of January and February 2019 the number of operations increased by 8,3% with respect to the same period of 2018 with a total of 313.817 flights in the set of airports in the Aena network. While finally, it is highlighted through these official data that 78.390 tons of goods were transported in this period, which translates into an increase of 5,9% compared to February 2018.
