What is an unemployment benefit?

Unemployment benefit is nothing more than the help that the state gives to workers when they lose their jobs, this help has something in common for all Spaniards, the unemployed must have been contributing a minimum to access the subsidy, depending on their contribution and their income will be the unemployment benefit

Unemployment benefits are existential in nature and there are several types of unemployment benefit of which we are going to talk to you next.

Subsidy for insufficient contribution

This unemployment benefit is given to people who still do not have their contribution year - which is the minimum required to collect -; however, it can be requested from when the person reaches three months and has family dependents. If you do not have family dependents, the time that you must have been working is at least 6 months.

Familiar help

This subsidy is given to people who have family dependents and who have already exhausted their benefit.

Aid for people over 45 years of age

This help is given to people who have already exhausted their unemployment benefit and are over 45 years old, may or may not have dependents.

Subsidy for people over 55

This subsidy is given to people who have financial problems before retirement and are already over 55 years old. For this type of help to be given, certain requirements must be met.

Allowance for returned emigrants

It is a help that is given to immigrants who after a while return to Spain from countries that have some kind of agreement with the country and that do not belong to the European Economic Bloc.

Allowance for released from prison

As its name indicates, it is an aid granted to those released who carry a sentence of more than 6 months in prison. In addition to this help, they are entitled to other benefits.

Disability Review Allowance

With this unemployment aid, a disability pension is provided to people who have a deficiency in disability income or had a disability pension and have improved.

Agrarian income

This aid is granted to the unemployed who do agricultural work occasionally in areas such as Extremadura and Andalusia.

Documents for the subsidy for insufficient contribution

To request this type of help, a series of documentation must be presented and the administration will assess whether or not to grant the subsidy:

  • The registration of the person requesting help on the unemployment card. Procedures must be completed within 15 business days after leaving work.
  • The official form of the subsidy application must be completed. This form must have the income statement of the person requesting it as well as the people that said applicant is in charge of. The bank documentation and the activity commitment must also be presented.
  • Identification of the person requesting the aid must be presented and if they have dependent children or live with them. Said family members must be included in the application. Present the unexpired DNI, the family book or the equivalent in foreign documentation if necessary.
  • You must present the certificate of the company in which you have worked before being unemployed. In case your company has not delivered it to you, you can request that it be sent directly to you.
  • The proof of the last income in case the employment office requests it.
  • A copy of the employment contracts that have been in the last 6 years must be presented in case the corresponding benefit has not been collected. In case you don't have them, you can ask for them at the employment office and they will tell you the amount of the quote that will be given to you.
  • Copy of part-time work contracts prior to the last termination in which you have worked in the last six years, if you have not received any benefits for them. You can request them at the employment office if they have to calculate the days of quoted work.
  • Document stating the account number where we want the unemployment benefit to be entered and the account holder.

The person who wants to apply for the subsidy must present the papers about 15 days after the end of the employment contract - weekends are not counted - and can do so online at the Sepe page or you can do it at the benefits office by appointment.

Documents to request the subsidy for family charges

  • The same documentation that we have named in the previous section must be delivered, in addition to that you must present the following documentation.
  • The valid ID of the person requesting the aid must be presented or, in the case of foreigners, the identification card. The family book must be presented along with a photocopy and in case the person requesting the loan is married, a photocopy of the husband's ID.
  • All working family members must present photocopies of their current ID and payroll. The income statement of all the people who work in the family unit must also be submitted.
  • In the event of a divorce, the legal document must be presented. If the children are foreigners, the document that verifies it must also be presented. If you have a relative outside the country, you must ask the consulate for the certificate that specifies what you do outside the country and what is the amount of money you earn.
  • In order to request this help, you have a period of 15 days from the end of the employment contract. In this case, weekends and holidays will not be counted. In case the person is collecting unemployment, this help must be requested one month after the contributory pension.

Subsidy for exhaustion of the benefit

  • The documentation of the people in charge must be presented.
  • All the documents that have been named in the previous section must be presented, removing those that specify family members.

Subsidy for people over 45

  • As in the previous cases, the same documents as in the first section must be presented 15 days after the end of the employment contract and one month after the contributory pension has been exhausted.

Subsidy for people over 55

  • The same documentation as in the first point. It must be submitted within 15 business days and after one month of collecting unemployment benefits. You must bear in mind that the waiting month in all cases begins on the day you register to claim the pension or aid when you are already 45 years old.
  • To be entitled to this benefit, the last job must have been more than 6 months.
    Extraordinary aid

For people who do not have a specific type of regulation, there are other types of aid that they can request.

This type of extraordinary aid, occurs in the following cases:

  • Released from prison. This aid is granted to people who are released from prison after having spent at least 6 months in prison. In case the person is called to carry out any type of work, they cannot refuse and to access this help, they must not be charging any type of help.
  •  Immigrant workers. This help is given when the person of Spanish origin had to emigrate to another country for a minimum period of three years but wants to return to their country. In this case, the aid is always requested one month after the person's arrival. The country you were in cannot be part of the European Union. You can access the charge of 487 euros per month but you must have worked for at least 12 months in the country you are returning from.
  • Disability allowance. This aid is given to people who have had a total disability pension and have experienced an improvement. In order to access this aid, the income of 485 euros must not be exceeded. Nor can you be entitled to unemployment while you are collecting this pension. You must have been registered for a month as a petitioner for unemployment.
  • Plan prepare. Thanks to this help, up to 400 euros can be received and granted to people who have exhausted all their benefits as a little extra time in which they can find a job. The total of this money is 2700 euros that is granted to people who do not work, divided into about 6 months. In return, the person receives training courses without refusing to do so.

• Voluntary return to Spain from another country. This help will be given as long as the country in which you were has a subsidy agreement with Spain and you can request it one month after arriving in the country. It is only valid for people who have Spanish nationality and have not returned to Spain within 3 years.
