When is the extra pay charged: terms and how much

When is extra pay charged?

The extra payments they are an incentive for all employed workers because he knows that, at least twice a year, he will receive a double salary. That is if they are not prorated over the twelve months. But do you know when the extra pay is charged?

Today we want to stop you to understand what the extra payments are, what they include and when they are charged. You want to know more?

What are the extra payments

Before knowing when the extra pay is charged, the most normal thing is know what we are referring to with those terms.

an extra pay It is an extraordinary gratification that every employee receives. In fact, it is recognized in article 31 of the Workers' Statute and they are economic amounts that a worker receives extra.

Also the Workers' Statute itself specifies that there will be two extraordinary payments. One of them must be paid over the Christmas holidays while the other is more open to negotiation or, in this case, to what is stipulated in the Collective Agreement of each sector (although it is normal for it to be in the month of June or July).

When is extra pay charged?

Extra pay

Imagine that you have your month's payroll. Your salary will appear in it, but also if there are bonuses, extras, allowances, three-year periods... That is, apart from the base salary, it can be increased by seniority, by objectives, etc. Y the final amount would be what the worker would receive minus the part of Social Security that he has to pay.

Now, does that payroll show an apportionment of extra payments? If so, it means that, over time, They pay you a proportional part of the extra pay, in such a way that you would receive it through the monthly salary.

Another assumption that you can find is that, during the Christmas holidays, your company pays you not only your payroll, but also two more payments of your base salary. No, they were not wrong. It is possible to establish, if it comes by Collective Agreement, that the payment of the two extras be on the same date, in such a way that instead of having two extra payments, there would only be one.

Finally, we have the most normal assumption, is to collect two payments, one in the month of December and another established by the Collective Agreement.

Dates to collect the extra pay

We have told you before that, by the Workers' Statute, one of the extra payments must be received in the month of December. And that the other is established by Convention.

The normal thing in almost all collective agreements is that the extraordinary payments are:

One in July, which is called extra summer pay, focused above all on workers having a little more money to be able to go on vacation. Specifically, it is established that the payment of this must be made between July 25 and July 15.

Another one in December, the Christmas bonus, which is also focused on being able to enjoy the Christmas holidays with the family in a more comfortable way. This one, unlike the other, it is specified that it must be paid between December 20 and 25. But in reality the agreement itself can vary these dates.

It should also be borne in mind that one thing is when they pay it, and another when the money is received. For example, if your company makes the transfer to you on December 20, as long as it is from the "normal" channel, it means that you should receive it between the 21st and the 22nd. But it is not usually available on the same day (unless it is in the same bank as the company). In addition, it must be taken into account that, if it is done on a Friday, the transfer will not arrive until at least the following Monday.

Why is the extra pay less than my salary?

Person wondering when the extra pay is charged

One of the doubts of many workers when it comes to seeing that they have been paid the extra pay is the fact that this amount may differ from the normal salary. For example, if your salary is 1300 and your extra pay is 1000. Does this mean that the company has made a mistake?

Actually it may not.

And it is that many times we tend to think that an extra payment is a normal salary but here you have to remove diets, gratuities, extras, etc.. and is governed by the base salary, the one that appears in your employment contract or the one stipulated for the job you are doing.

In addition, it may be the case that you joined the company later on January 1 and therefore You do not receive the full extra payments but a proration based on the days you have been working in the company, hence it may have a lower value than a normal salary.

Is extra pay always charged?

Waiting to collect the extra pay

Despite the fact that in the Workers' Statute it is said that extra pay is a right of the workers, there is an assumption that denies the collection of that payment to a specific group: low workers.

A discharge is considered a suspension of the employment contract, which means that, if you're on sick leave, you are not entitled to that extra pay unless, by Collective Agreement, something else is said (which can happen).

The same could happen with a leave of absence, either for childcare, position or for another reason; assuming a suspension of the employment contract, the extra payments would be annulled. And it would be resumed the moment they went back to work (but it also implies that they would receive a proration of the extra pay at the time it was paid).

As you can see, the issue of extra pay is quite interesting and at the same time a moment of many doubts for the workers, not only because they know when the extra pay is charged, but also if the amount that is deposited by the company is the right one or there is some data that is wrong. Has the date on which they are charged been clear to you?
